The City of Victoria, BC is the third municipality in Canada to tackle single-use waste with a regulation to require reusables!

The City estimates that more than 220,000 single-use items like coffee cups, containers, utensils and bags are thrown out every day in their city. Public consultations, and meetings with business stakeholders informed the regulation.

The City voted in favour of the by-law in September 2024, with multiple phases:

  • By December 2024, businesses can only provide Accessories-on-request - including online, delivery and drive-through orders
  • By March 2026 Restaurants must provide reusable cups and foodware for dine-in orders
